#45 How to cure FOMO (fear of missing out)
Next time FOMO creeps in, ask yourself this simple question to get grounded and make better decisions in just two minutes. Read on to find out.
Have you ever noticed how certain opportunities refuse to leave you alone?
A potential purchase.
A good deal.
A tempting invitation.
You’re not sure you even want it.
But now it’s there.
And your mind keeps circling the same questions:
What if I miss out?
What if this was meant for me?
What if I regret saying no?
You go about your day, but part of your attention is tied up with that one unresolved decision.
Yesterday I had coffee with a friend who loves watches.
The serious kind of love. The kind where you can talk for an hour about movements, dials, and brands most people have never heard of.
He told me he was thinking about buying a very expensive watch.
He liked it.
He could afford it.
But something didn’t feel settled.
You could almost hear the noise in his head.
“What if this is a once in a lifetime opportunity?”
“What if I regret not buying it?”
“What if the price goes up?”
You know that feeling.
An opportunity shows up. Fear of missing out kicks in. Your intuition goes quiet. Doubt takes the microphone.
And instead of being present, your mind keeps chewing on the same questions for days. Sometimes weeks.
I’ve learned that when this happens, it’s rarely about the thing itself.
So I shared a question that has saved me a lot of mental real estate over the years.
Here it is.
“If this opportunity had never shown up, would I have gone looking for it on my own?”
Most of the time, the honest answer is no.
And the moment I answer no, something interesting happens. The noise stops.
It doesn’t work all the time.
But 80% of the time, I realize it wasn’t coming from within. It was just something shiny that wandered into my field of vision. A side quest pretending to be important.
That question works because it reconnects you with yourself, rather than external opinions.
If you want, write it down somewhere you’ll see it again.
And the next time an opportunity shows up and starts taking up too much space and time in your head, ask it.
You might even have one sitting in front of you right now.
