Two days ago we heard an anonymous quote that caught our attention:

“I’m a Libertarian at the national level, a Republican at the state level, a Democrat at the municipal level, and a Communist at the family level.”

At first glance, it sounds like a joke.

Then you sit with it for a moment… and you realize it explains far more than politics.

Here’s why.

When you’re dealing with an entire country, distance is enormous. Millions of people. Endless complexity. At that scale, freedom matters most. Fewer rules. Less control. More room for individuals to decide for themselves. Big systems breathe better with autonomy.

Move a little closer, down to the state level, and something shifts.

Now you’re managing regions. Infrastructure, schools, budgets, systems that need order. Here, structure, fiscal responsibility, and clear rules begin to matter more.

Come closer still, into cities and towns.

People live shoulder to shoulder. They share roads, schools, water, public spaces. Problems are practical and immediate. Cooperation is needed even more. Local government works best when people actively help one another.

And then there’s the family.

No invoices. No scorekeeping. No market value.

You don’t compete with your spouse. You don’t charge your children rent on love. You give what you can. You receive what you need.

So what is this quote really saying?

Something simple. Something honest.

The closer the relationship, the more sharing makes sense.

The farther the distance, the more freedom becomes essential.

But there’s a deeper layer here, and this is the part that matters most.

Every one of these traits are inside us.

The libertarian and the communist.

The conservative and the progressive.

The rule keeper and the rule breaker.
