We live in a world that seems to grow more complex by the week.
And with it… the decisions we face.
You may recognize a few of these moments:
You sit down to build a marketing strategy… and suddenly there are dozens of variables pulling for your attention.
You consider buying something important, like a car or a house… and find yourself stuck in analysis paralysis.
Or you replay a conversation with a friend… turning it over and over, wondering what the right move is.
Different situations. Same underlying challenge:
Complex decisions, showing up again and again.
And if anything, life is not getting simpler. It is becoming more layered, more demanding, more intricate.
So what can you do when everything feels tangled?
There is a principle we return to often. It is simple, practical, and has stood the test of nearly 700 years.
In the 14th century, a philosopher named William of Ockham introduced what is now known as Occam’s Razor.
Its essence is this:
The simplest solution is usually the correct one.
Now, that may sound almost too simple. But there is a powerful reason it works.
Left to its own devices, the mind tends to complicate.
It adds layers that are not needed.
It imagines scenarios that are not true.
It revisits past pains and projects them into the future.
This is how clear thinking becomes crowded faster than you clap your hands.
Occam’s Razor cuts through that noise.
It brings you back to what is essential… and helps you move forward with less friction, less wasted energy.
The simplest solution is usually the correct one.
There is, however, one important distinction.
The simplest solution is not always the most simplistic one. It is the solution that requires the fewest assumptions. That difference matters.
So the next time you face a complex decision…
Pause for a moment and ask yourself:
“What is the explanation, or the choice, that relies on the fewest assumptions? What is the simplest solution?”
Very often, that is your answer.
And when you act on it, you may find something surprising…
Clarity returns faster than you expected.
