There is a quiet dynamic at work in your life… one that shapes your progress far more than talent, strategy, or opportunity.
Most people never see it.
Yet it quietly caps the growth of the majority of high achievers.
It’s Pride and Shame. Two faces of the same coin.
You never experience one without the other.
Feel pride… and somewhere, often out of sight, shame is present.
Feel shame… and pride is there as well.
They arrive together.
Always.
But here’s the twist…
You don’t perceive them at the same time.
You perceive them one after the other.
Sequentially.
Which makes the connection even easier to miss.
Sometimes the “other side” is not even conscious. Because it’s not in front of you.
But it is there, influencing how far you’re willing to go.
Here is how this plays out.
Imagine pride as slightly warm water… and shame as slightly cold water.
Now imagine you’re taking a shower.
But the water behaves strangely.
It runs 10 seconds warm… then 10 seconds cold… then warm again… then cold again.
Not ideal.
But tolerable.
You can stand it.
Now fast forward.
As your business grows… you achieve more… and naturally, you feel more pride.
At the same time, subconsciously, shame grows as well.
Back to the shower.
Now the swings feel sharper.
Warm… cold… warm… cold.
It’s almost painful.
You would much rather choose one or the other… but the alternation continues.
Then comes bigger success.
Greater achievements.
Stronger pride.
And with it… stronger shame.
Now the water is no longer slightly warm and slightly cold.
It’s hot… and then ice cold.
The contrast becomes unbearable. You can’t take it anymore.
And here’s what most people don’t realize:
It’s not growth that becomes painful.
It’s the destabilizing swing between pride and shame.
So what happens?
You stop.
Not because you lack ambition… but because your system is trying to protect you from that internal whiplash.
And just like that… growth slows… or quietly stalls.
This is why so many capable high achievers plateau.
Not for lack of opportunity.
But for lack of understanding this cycle.
Now here’s the good news.
Once you see it… you can manage it.
And once you can manage it… you are free to grow again.
Freely. Smoothly. Without that inner resistance holding you back.
Which brings us to a simple idea worth keeping close:
“Take no credit, take no blame, just keep focused on the aim.”
Those words from B.J. Palmer are more than philosophy.
They are a powerful reminder to step off the pride-shame rollercoaster…
and stay centered as you grow.
Use them.
Return to them.
Let them steady you when the swings begin.
Because when you loosen the grip of pride… and soften the weight of shame… something shifts.
You grow again.
